POSE # 3 THE SHOULDER STAND – THE MOTHER OF ALL YOGA POSES This is a great pose for the body to release any stored toxins. I felt AH-MAZING after this particular pose because of the twist and breathing combo. The move takes some seriously took my flexibility to the next level (to which I was delightfully surprised). POSE # 2 THE SEATED HALF LOTUS SAGE TWIST (The move was as tricky as it sounds) When hinging from the hips, engage the muscles in the front of the body, especially the core muscles, by drawing the navel into spine. Because I’m a newbie I had to slightly bend my knees to allow me to go deeper into the stretch. The ultimate hamstring stretch and back stretch at once. Before I know it, it is like I am a thousand miles away, and it feels so liberating.Īfter leaving energized, invigorated, refreshed, motivated and grounded… I have made an oath to myself and my workmates that I will at least do this once a week… the benefits are just too rewarding not to! Some of my favourite moves for the day! I focus on my breath and the layers of noises around me – filtering out all the negative energy and soaking in simplicity and recharging myself with positivity. Meditating is a foreign thing to me, but I do my best to quiet my mind and allow my body to melt into the mat. To wrap up the perfect lesson, I lay stretched out on my back, eyes closed and dedicated eight or so minutes to meditating (now this is another story). I relished being able to put myself in the ultimate stretch while receiving a natural internal massage to my Kidneys, Liver and Intestines – all from the twists and shapes I was forming into with my body. The beauty of Yoga is each pose serves a different purpose. I had to listen to my body, ease myself back into the simple Yoga sequences like upward dog to downward dog, then when I felt comfortable, I could challenge myself and take my body to its limit by focusing my breaths and move my way into the more difficult poses. Reality quickly seeped in as we got into the poses …I wasn’t a limber 17 years old anymore, I was actually an extremely tight, wound up and awkward twenty something old with shallow breathing. I spend so much of my time connected with technology that it was nice, to just ‘be’ and focus on the present.

Me looking all nervous for my class – eeeep!Įasing my way into the 75 minute class, my initial emotions were a mixture of excitement and relief because I could dedicate the next 1hour and 15mins completely to myself. As a slotted into my spot I got amped and excited for my Ashtanga class (more on this here). But my insecurities were quickly diminished when the instructor made me feel welcome.

Walking into the studio, I’ll be honest I felt a tad intimidated by all the professional looking Yogis sprawled out, looking all flexible and graceful. Product: Synergy 7/8 Core Stability Tight, Elevate Jacket, Magnetic excel tank and LJ Glass water bottle & Good Karma Yoga Mat & Bag I simply couldn’t resist the temptation to not get me some new Yoga fit threads. Okay, so I know this isn’t a necessity, but working at Lorna Jane opens a whole world of temptation. Close to work – Check, and along one of my favourite streets in Brisbane – Bonus! So, I actively began searching yoga locations (sanctuary potentials) in the area and stumbled upon New Farm Power Yoga. If I was really going to stay true to my goal, I had to find the perfect place (nay sanctuary) to kick start my love affair with Yoga. Without much luck in January, I have decided February and beyond will be my time to get that much needed TLC back into my body. So, this year one of my New Years Resolutions was to s-l-o-w down, and reignite my love for Yoga. I must admit, in the midst of gaining general fitness (and getting older), I was left with sore and tired muscles and a whole lot of shin splints to boot. What can I say I just can’t keep still for too long. I just loved it, but somehow it was trampled by my super energetic go-go personality, that saw me take on more training like running, tennis and surfing. I used to be a Yoga girl, practicing two afternoons a week while dabbling in Pilates and Bikram. My yoga experience of rolling out my mat, and stepping foot back into the studio goes a little something like this… AH, YOGA, it has been awhile…four years to be precise, and I seriously cannot believe I have left it so long.
