There are shades of Dead Kennedys and Black Flag on Shillelagh, while Grave Slave’s angularity is reminiscent of Patton’s 2002 collaboration with The Dillinger Escape Plan.ĭead Cross’ comely disquiet is bathed in that inimitable Patton charisma, and his vocals add in so many diverse elements that Lombardo and co cannot have foreseen. At times the riffs are very Slayer, particularly so on the track Divine Filth. Now the group has released Shillelagh, a spasmodic, punky thrasher that shows off Patton’s ability to use operatic vocals to encase goofy lyrics like, I took a pee and it came out red. 2018’s Dead Cross (Yes, it’s self-titled again.Yes, I also hate it when bands do that.) is two new songs and two remixes from 2017’s Dead Cross. As often happens the year after such an amazing release, they’ve followed it up with a ‘don’t forget about us’ EP. Lombardo’s double-bass pedals take a sound hammering, with fierce guitar hooks laid on by Retox’s Michael Crain. Last year Dead Cross blew us away with their propulsive, self-titled debut LP. Unsurprisingly, the drums are ferocious from the off. These adrenalising speedballs of hardcore punk and metal are certain to leave you juiced up and riot ready listen to this record before that all-important job interview and someone’s sure to leave with a stapler up their arse.
DEAD CROSS SHILLELAGH PLUS
Includes unlimited streaming of Dead Cross via the free Bandcamp app, plus high-quality download in MP3. At times this new venture recalls the more feral moments of Fantômas’ debut, though Dead Cross’ short, sharp shocks are much more combative and direct. Shillelagh by Dead Cross, released 04 August 2017. The pair first collaborated back in 1998, as one half of avant-metal supergroup Fantômas. When Dave Lombardo (Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies) found himself without a singer for wrathful new project Dead Cross, an assistant urged him to call on friend and vocal Aladdin’s cave Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr Bungle), who gleefully accepted the invitation.
